I am one of those people who likes to eat their breakfast meats with maple syrup. Bacon, sausage, ham, scrapple — you name it, I’ll dip it in some maple syrup. If you haven’t done this before, then try it before you knock it.
Well, recently I was craving freshly baked buttermilk biscuits, so I thought I’d make my own but wanted to add a little twist. The maple bacon combo that I enjoy at breakfast quite often immediately came to mind and I ran with it!
I ended up with delicious maple bacon cheddar drop biscuits (there’s scallions in there too, but the name was getting a little long…)
I had some self-rising flour left over from making hush puppies a while back, and saw a simple recipe for buttermilk biscuits on the back of the packaging. Leveraging the recipe, I added everything beyond the white ingredients to amp them up and make them my own.
The biscuits were super easy to prep — and because these are drop biscuits, there’s no fretting with kneading, rolling, cutting, etc to get perfectly rounded biscuits (aka – kinda hard to mess up). Yay easiness!
I could hardly wait for them to bake in the oven! The recipe said to bake them 10-12 minutes, but I found that in my oven they really needed 15 minutes until they were golden and melty and perfect.
When they were out of the oven I brushed them with a bit of melted butter and then I dove right in and had one.
They were (insert your best delicious food adjective here)!!!
The buttermilk made the biscuits light and tangy, the bacon and cheddar cheese made them salty and gooey, the little bit of maple syrup added the sweetness that brought me back to my breakfast bliss and the green onion added a nice little bite to round it all out perfectly.
These would make great biscuits to have for breakfast on their own or even with a little egg, or to have on the side with dinner. No matter when you decide to eat them though, they will bring a smile to your face!
Try these maple bacon cheddar drop biscuits ASAP! (Maybe you’ll understand my maple/breakfast meat habit after you do) : )
